I Ditched Bras and Heres Why

I stopped wearing a bra & I feel better than I ever did before!

It was about a year ago my relationship with bras came to an end; falling out of love with the restricted fabric trapping my boobs holding them in one place like a prisoner. Why was I doing this to my body, surely having an underwired bra on yourself all day long isn’t good for you. It was totally not comfortable either.
I decided to wear bras less and less often simply for my own personal comfort. I really didn’t care what people thought about it. I am a firm believer in doing what’s right for your own happiness and wellbeing. This was what I needed so I did it!

It was of course a little embarrassing at times but you soon learn that there’s nothing wrong with it! Purely natural the only reason we feel like we need to hide them is because it has become a taboo for women to expose their breasts; it has become sexualised in today’s culture. However back in earlier time periods it was perfectly normal for us women to let them be free, which you can see through sculptures & paintings of women in Ancient Greece & Rome; even in some cults.
The only reason to why we have been told for many years to cover up is due to sexualisation & objectification.

After a while I wanted to actually know if there were benefits to not wearing a bra or if it was better to give breasts support. I got Ecosia search engine up (each search made they plant a tree; check it out) and searched for answers to the questions I had.
I soon learnt that if anything not wearing a bra does your body a lot more good than actually wearing one. Even though throughout my early teenage years I was told that if I did not wear a bra my boobs would become saggy; I didn’t want boobs to be hitting my knees before I was 30, what a scary thought.

So I religiously wore this torture device to ensure that they would not get saggy. The irony of that is, wearing a bra trains your breast tissue to rely on this support so in actual fact we are creating saggy boobs not stopping it by wearing a bra. If we free the breasts we can increase elasticity and boost collagen production, basically train the breast to support themselves. Which is completely natural & much more comfortable.

Restricting circulation

There have also been studies that have shown that bras have no health benefits for us. A sports researcher & professor at University of Franche-Comte conducted a 15 year study on the effects of bras on 330 women between the ages of 18-35. The research showed that those who did not wear a bra had perkier breasts and those who stopped wearing one had a 7mm lift. Bras therefore have the ability to restrict circulation to the area and reduce breast tone. Why would you still wear one right?

Stabbing Underwire

Of course the main reason for why I decided to ditch the bras was because they were so uncomfortable. I hated the underwire’s constant stabbing or completely popping through the fabric, the annoying straps that are never correct or equal on each shoulder. Ditching them altogether was a great decision; I do however have a few bralettes that I would wear if I was feeling like I needed some support during that day.

Expensive Fabric

I also hate how expensive buying a bra is, like why does it cost so much to wear a piece of fabric around your back it’s pretty pointless. I understand that many girls like the idea of spending money on bras; but for me personally I don’t see why we have to be seen as this flawless girl dressed up in this uncomfortable lingerie for a man’s sake. I am not one for this, I will do what makes me happy, comfortable and definitely what makes me confident and I am confident in my own body. If anything the lingerie makes me feel like an object & more self-conscious about my body. Is anyone else on the wavelength as me?

If your a woman who wears a bra don’t feel like I’m telling you that it’s a bad thing & you shouldn’t wear one- if it makes you comfortable keep at it! I just do what makes me happy and free; and not wearing a torture device is what makes me happy! Let me know in the comments below if you are similar to me or not, what are your favourite or worst thing about wearing bras?  I would love to know!

I agree about what you’ve written here. And yes, the stabbing underwire is simply the worst feeling ever. Thank you for this. 💕

Thank you for your comment; I’m glad you like it, and yes the underwire is a pain to have literally haha, Hope you are having a great day x

Thank you so much; do you like bras then? Hope you are well x

It’s ok😊 And yeah…kinda. I can only stand sports bras, I don’t really wear normal ones! Sport bras are just much more comfortable to wear

So I don’t really have big boobs, and so i feel like bras aren’t really uncomfortable for me? I wear them depending on how I’m feeling and what would look better with what I’m wearing. I think it’s safe to say that I probably wear a bra about 3-4 days out of the week, at most? I’m all for people doing what’s most comfortable for them! I really like this post, I feel like some girls forget that not wearing a bra is an option! xxx

Thanks Melina; Yes of course everyone is different when it comes to this issue, if they aren’t annoying to someone then I guess there is nothing wrong with it haha, I’m glad you don’t find them that bad. And of course going braless is definitely an option there’s no harm in it. Hope you are well x

Great post! I’ve swiped to crop tops and now can’t stand to put an ordinary bra on. I was also told that I would have saggy boobs if I didn’t wear a bra by a very “well informed” older cousin, despite the fact that my mum rarely wore one. Though I do have a terrible weakness for lingerie I think going braless is great 🙂

Thank you; I do think a lot of girls are told they would have saggy boobs if they didn’t wear one when they were young, but yes if you do like them then there is nothing wrong with that girly

I absolutely love this post. So formative! I never feel comfortable with a bra on. I have thought about completely ditching them but I just never got the courage to officially do it

Thank you so much; I’m glad you like it. Sometimes it just takes time to actually make a change, I wish you well x

I really enjoyed this post, it was very insightful especially as it’s something I think about regularly. I wear my bra regularly because of working in a school and I feel embarrassed and uncomfortable, but whenever I walk in from work it comes straight off because it does become uncomfortable and the wires drive me mad!

I’m glad you liked it Emmie, maybe you could change to a bra with no underwire for work? That way the wire wouldn’t be annoying and you are still covered while doing your job. Do what works for you- I hope your day has been joyful.
      Much love xx

I loved reading this post! I personally never feel comfortable with my bra on, but I wear bras like 5 days a week and I don’t have the courage to ditch them. Maybe I should try harder, haha x
