Christmas songs, in sophies mind

Ah, the Christmas songs. Every year they slowly start to creep on over sound systems as you browse through the clothing racks of your favourite shops or driving anywhere. Love them or loathe them, we all have ones that stick out in our mind. That we sing over and over again.

I’ve been ridiculously festive this year. I think planning blogmas back in October had an impact on that. But I found myself searching Spotify weekly for a list of Christmas songs to enjoy and I’m not ashamed to say, I love Christmas songs.

Over time you develop a list of favourites. I’ve grouped all of mine in a Spotify playlist, there’s a lot. But I’ll only give a low down on the top five, don’t worry.

Lonely Christmas – Scotty Sire ft. Heath Hussar and Mariah Amato

This is probably a song you haven’t heard before. Mainly because it was released last Christmas and is by Youtubers. Scotty Sire is a YouTube singer, he started off writing silly little songs but now he has some decent tunes. Probably some of his songs have become my favourites; Get Better is amazing and speaks to me. But this is about Lonely Christmas, it’s not the most festive as it’s a song about breaking up. I just really enjoy the melody and flow of it. Go give it a listen, I think you might enjoy the song too.

Merry Christmas Everyone – Shakin’ Stevens

A classic right? Who doesn’t like this one. A feel good oldie, that’s cheesy but you can’t have Christmas without it. In my house we can’t, my mam and gramps love this one. I have such good childhood memories listening to this song, in fact as I’m writing this right now I have it playing. I can’t help but think of evenings in December in my grandparents house dancing to this with my gramps in the kitchen doing the classic grandad shake from side to side, haha. A right classic for my family.

Fairytale of New York – The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl

This song certainly doesn’t follow the narative of “YAY! Christmas!” I think that’s why it’s one of my favourite. An anthem following the lives of an Irish couple who have moved to New York to love the American Dream, only for it all to go down the drain. It’s a song embedded in British culture, because we all love to moan and Christmas doesn’t change that. Another song that screams nostalgia, it was a song that my nan absolutely loved, she played it constantly and I guess we all grew to love it because of her haha.

I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday – Wizzard

It’s a cool Christmas song, I enjoy the jazzy aspect to it. But the main reason it’s on my list is because we used to pretend I was one of the kids in the video playing the saxophone. I am the oldest of the grandkids so every time one of the others were old enough, my grandad would say “look it’s Sophie-Leigh” and they would all fall for it. It was quite funny, because when I was younger I really did resemble the little girl.

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas – Johnny Mathis

One that you hear in a lot of Christmas movies, it’s jolly and festive. It just makes you excited for the holiday season. The song has been covered by many artists over the years such as Michael Bublé (who only seems to come out into the spotlight in the festive season haha). I enjoy the classic version a lot more, it’s just I listen to it more during the holidays and to me, it sounds better.

What are your favourite Christmas songs?
