The build up to Christmas is something else, it gives you such a magical feeling. The lights everywhere, dark and cold evenings and just that festive feeling. It is the reason why I love this time of the year.
The family time that surrounds Christmas is really special. Everyone gets together to spend the holidays together as everyone is less busy and has more time to relax. I know for me it’s a special time of the year as I don’t get to go home that often. Spending Christmas with my gramps, mam, brother and pops, is just magical. I haven’t been home to Northern Ireland since last Christmas so haven’t seen my gramps in just under a year. I called him in September to let him know I booked my flights home for the holidays and he got overwhelmed, thinking I wasn’t going back. Surprise, I am! I honestly can’t wait to see him again, I miss him like crazy. Of course I miss all my family, but I’ve seen them multiple times from their trip to England and my little break out to Fuerteventura. Seeing my gramps will be special.
We all know how much I love my hoodies. I’ve got enough of them to last me years. I believe I thrive in the colder weather, it’s where I’m happiest haha because I love to layer up and wear my cosy clothing this time of the year. The cold winter nights or days doesn’t matter when, I will always wear a hoodie or a jumper. I’ve got so many you’d think it’s all I own. I guess they just make me feel safe, I have always loved wearing hoodies. I even just chill in the house in them, during the summer too (I’ve no shame).
It’s a time to reflect on the year, be grateful for what you have or have achieved throughout. I enjoy reflecting on what I have and know that I am lucky to be in the situation that I am in. There are some people who are in worse situations, who don’t have a roof over their heads or food on the table.
Whilst I don’t have abundance, I have enough to survive and that’s what I’m grateful for. This time of the year, I usually try to do more for those less fortunate than me. I have previously helped the homeless with giving them food, water, hot drinks and blankets. It’s not much but like I mentioned I don’t have an abundance so I give what I can and hope it helps a little.
I think a big part of why I love this time of the year is because of my mother. She is Christmas obsessed and loves this season a lot more than I do. My mam decorates the house as soon as November is over, if she had it her way the decorations would be up all year round haha. I remember talking to her in July and in the background I could hear Christmas music, turned out she had been watching Christmas movies in July.
Guess I don’t love Christmas as much as my mam does but she does influence the reasons why I enjoy it. I don’t think the season would be as magical without her obsession. Christmas in our house is like stepping into Lapland and living in the North Pole for the entire month of December. Decorated in every room, inside and outside, fake snow on tables. Candles switched from normal clean cotton to candy cane etc. The whole house gets transformed, making the festive season that much more magical. Those are some of the reasons why I love this time of year.
